The edge of winter?



Thursday morning I snapped this picture across our side field intending to show you our beautiful fall colors in all their glory.


We knew Fridays’ rain would bring a touch of snow because of falling temperatures but we didn’t mind since the dusting was stunning with the fall colors.




But a day later never in our wildest imagination did we think in October we would wake up to not a dusting of snow but two feet of snow! This hasn’t happened since 1972 and has only happened four times since weather record keeping here.



Poor Dylan dog is dumbfounded by all the snow! Didn’t we just get rid of this deep stuff?




The leaves aren’t even all off the trees for goodness sakes and they’re lying in the snow mocking us to come rake them up.

This is going to put a little bit of a damper on Halloween this year but being hardly little New Englanders I know the little ghosts and goblins will make do.

    I know - TOTALLY crazy. I heard on the news that this is the most people in CT out of power at the same time - EVER!! I took my daughter to look at a college in Maine on Friday. We stayed over and I rushed to get her back to her boarding school because I knew the storm was coming. But like you, little did I know what was upon us. I only made it 6 exits down I91 and had to get off & stay at a hotel - where we lost power!! Got home yesterday to full power and warmth - so grateful!! Your view is magnificent, by the way!

    Wow! I'm in love with your place. It's so peaceful, beautiful, inspiring. I live in a place very similar too. It's wonderful to be close to nature, right? Although I'm always scared of bugs. So, summers are great but a bit of torture for me too! LOL

    By the way, snow at this time is pretty crazy, but it's also so beautiful.

    In Holland the temperature is 63 F, quite unusual for this time of year.

    You weren't kidding Debra when you said 2 FEET!!!!!!! Holy moly...Dylan looks confused!! It is sooo beautiful though, your pictures took me away for a minute there, I felt calmer already, trying desperately to decompress after a hellish morning, the likes of which I haven't seen THANK GOD in a very long time. Deep breaths, deep breaths......gorgeous!

    the photo's started out so serene and absolutely gorgeous. will admit to a tinge of jealousy for living in such a beautiful part of the world. gosh the midwest is boring!
    then......not so jealous, love that we still have autumn, winter will be here soon enough!

    It has been crazy..fortunately we were lucky this time although some of our neighbors were not..and my brother and family has moved in with us for a few days due to power outages. Your pics are quite beautiful and one has to appreciate the beauty.

    I can't get over these beautiful pictures!!! What a beautiful place you live in! I can't believe the amount of snow; I have heard on the news that back East was hit pretty hard with crazy winter conditions - but these images are wild! I'm just happy all is well and you have electricity... right?

    Anyhooooo, the last time I saw anything like this was when we lived in Germany & Austria, & did a lot of skiing... It STILL takes my breath away!!!

    I was stunned as it snowed ALL day Saturday!!! Limbs were drooping everywhere and I saw lines down.

    I, too, feel like we just took a short break since things last looked this way.

    As a Southerner, I'm still not used to all the cold. Luckily, with each year, I've gotten smarter about how to dress for the weather.

    The pictures above are stunning though -- a little gift from Mother Nature!!

    It's pretty crazy isn't it? But it's also so beautiful! (As long as you have power *winks*) That shot that looks like an allee of trees is gorgeous!
    For once I actually think the weather is better here in the Pacific Northwest than most of the rest of the country (Currently 60 and sunny)
    Thanks for giving me your guestimate on my bird. I think the beak may be too long to be an evening grosbeck? It has a beak almost like a hummingbird, yet it's quite large.....Oh and you don't need to warn your little birdies *winks* I like my stuffed birds at least 100 yrs old lol! Although given the noise our crows have been making I could make an exception harrumph.
    Does your step mother have a blog? Because I'd sure love to see her dome collection...... Vanna

    Oh Debra,
    What a beautiful autumnal scene in the first image!
    Then I scrolled down and my heart sank into the snow! Unbelievable! It seems like yesterday that winter was over in your region, and now.....brrh..

    All photos are so fantastic and just wonderful, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for a very quick snow-melt to see more of New Hampshire autumn.

    Meanwhile keep warm!

    Yes, Dylan does look flabbergasted!
    I saw a home for sale in Country Living Magazine that made me think of you. I went online to find the real estate listing. It's in Maryland, on the Potomac. Ten acres, barn, beautiful limestone house (falling down but that could be remedied). I want that so bad! I even found a police job fro Michael in the next town over...dreaming is free...

    These pictures are stunningly beautiful. The snow scenes look so romantic to me, straight out of a fairytale. We don't really get any here in Cape Town just on the high mountains. You are lucky to live in such a wonderful place. x Sharon

    Your photos are wonderful. Autumn in New England is always so gorgeous...but this year way too short! I'm sure by now it has melted and you are back to normal. It was much too early and I'm sure Dylan was joined by many who were confused. I'm hoping the surprise is over and now you have a mild winter.
