Quiet Calm

We woke this morning to a brisk wind and our first snowfall of the year thanks to a nor’easter coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. After last weeks Sandy and a week without electricity we’ve been praying this storm would be mild. All of our leaves are off the trees thanks to Sandy except this one little bit of new growth hanging onto its colorful leaves.

There’s a certain kind of quiet calm and a sense of peace with the first snow of the year.

We were also lucky enough to wake up to a ten-point buck feasting on one of the deer blocks we place out for them as a treat. We knew he was in the area from certain traces he has left behind and this morning we were graced by his presence.

So the first order of business this morning was to crank up our wood stove and get a toasty fire going for the day.

This guy on the other hand hates the heat and is very happy to spend his time playing out in the snow.

Please keep the people hardest hit by Sandy in your thoughts and prays. While this first snowfall is beautiful a lot of these people have no home and only the clothes on their back and this storm is going to be hard on them.

I hope you all are safe and warm and enjoying your week!

I thought you'd been quiet; I didn't realize you'd been without power. We had four inches of snow this morning and we weren't supposed to get any.

Beautiful deer! Do you ever find shed antlers?

Stay warm!

Such beautiful photos, Debra. I hope that you all are staying warm (except Dylan Dog). Heat and light are so easy to take for granted and my heart goes out to all of those who are without a warm place to go in the aftermath of Sandy.

Thanks for sharing the beauty with us! XO

I too have been so worried for those that are out in the cold or still don't have heat--how long can this continue?

Very happy that you are warm and dry--save for silly DD of course!!

So glad you are getting back to normal. My sister in NJ just got her power back yesterday. But that's the least of it. What a disaster. My heart breaks for everyone affected

Hi Debra....those pictures are stunning and certainly show this pre winter season at its prettiest. The picture of the buck deer is amazing!!! So close! I love deer, they are so beautiful!
Sorry you too lost power...its been a crazy 10 days for anyone in the northeast, some more than others. I too feel so sad for those without homes, power and/or food and of course those who lost loved ones. Such heartbreak with not a break given the snow we just got.
Stay safe and warm....thanks for your kind message- give cute Dylan a hug from Teddy!

First Debra, I am so happy that you are ok. I have worried so much for those hit by Sandy. We feel so helpless down here.
Such beautiful snow, lucky you, and the deer is amazing. And you puppy is just precious. The wood burning stove takes my breath away! Wow!
Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend.

Debra,
I'm thrilled you're all fine. You're so correct that they are so many that are less fortunate and I have been praying for those who've been affected by Sandy. It is such a difficult time. My Mom is still without power too... Beautiful photos however, especially of the buck. What a treat!! Take care of yourself and stay warm. XX

Each year I appreciate the snow less and less, but there is beauty to be enjoyed, so I bundle up and TRY to like it. The photo of the deer is stunning - so majestic!

Debra,
I just drove my husband to catch the morning train to the city and on my way back something told me to slow down and lo and behold 3 dear galloped across the street....my dog was with me and I think it was his sixth sense to warn me.
What a gorgeous image of that 10 pointer....it would make a splendid holiday card.
My heart goes out to those who are struggling to carry on without heat and electricity. I have a few bags to give, some warm coats and some canned goods for our village drive - We were without power for a week and not a day goes by that I count all my blessings. We all need to be mindful of those living with hardship - especially as the holidays roll in.

Hi Debra,

I too enjoy the calmness that we feel as winter sets it. Such an amazing photo you got of the buck! Usually I see them in my yard and if I take the photo through the window, it isn't very good and if I open the door they move on. Glad you are leaving them a treat :)

Our dogs enjoy the snow too! They like to get silly, run around, and apparently there are lots of good smells because they are always sniffing around. You'd think the snow would cover the smells..?

Enjoy your weekend ahead.

xx

I have been thinking of those who were hit by Sandy, now without homes and it makes me sad. I hope they will get some relief soon.

Oh my, the first snow, winter seems to knock on the door. Had a snowy weekend 2 weeks ago in Germany, felt like Christmas, rather mad :-(

Pleased to hear that you're safe and back to electricity, thought and was concerned about you.

Keep warm and have a great weekend!

Hi Debra - what a lovely post. Glad you and your family are safe since the storm.

We endured 8 days without power - and few fence sections and a huge tree limb came down (but not on anyone or thing!).

Since this storm I have really become more aware of just how lucky I am - that the storm didn't harm us (and we are a block from the water). I also know that I have been wasteful of electricity and gas - and I've begun to conserve. That probably wouldn't have happened before the storm.

We have deer on our property all the time - I wish they would only eat what I set out for them...but they love our plants...including the ones thaey are supposed to hate!

Debra,
It is SO great to be connected again! We, too, had a little snowfall last week. It is pretty, but melted within a couple of days. I still need to get my tulips planted for next Spring, so I was glad.

Your photo of the buck is incredible. Gorgeous. Such elegant creatures. It still takes me back when I see a fawn bouncing across my lawn.

Glad you are warm and safe after these crazy storms.

Debra,

I was so happy to hear from you! and now to see your beautiful photos! That deer is stunning! What a wonderful sight for early am.

The storms have been so horrible for so many that the damage the rest of us suffered is insignificant. I am heartbroken that two weeks later there are so very many still in such miserable conditions.

I hope you have a great week, stay warm!

Debra- What a beautiful scene you have. Nature can be kind and nature can be cruel.

My friend Liz and I are donating to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts with our Holiday Open Studios sale this December, I can't think of a worthier cause right now...
