Splash of color...Need your opinion

Can we talk? Lately I’ve seen rooms in magazines that have a simple pop of color, a pop of color that says look at me! Mainly a rustic orange/tomato a color I happen to love and seems to be a simpler, fresher version of red.

Being a textile dealer I get rolls of fabrics shipped to me to use in my business. So when I received this roll of rustic orange silk velvet I had no idea what I was going to use it on since antique textiles don’t come in this color. Then it happened, a yard sale beckoned me and a chair was purchased for the sum of $25 but with the most God awful 1940’s flowered fabric so an idea struck me……

Cover the chair in the tomato red silk velvet!  (Please ignore the sage green wall color because that color is going in January and will be replaced with a lovely gray.) The color was a bit bold and really had a POW factor so I tried to tame the color a bit with an antique tapestry pillow. But I don’t know while beautiful the chair is sort of screaming at me. So what do you think keep it or recover it?

    Oh at least there is some color, I am getting a little wore out of all these void of color rooms you see on the blogs and in the magazines. I for one, love color. Richard from My Old Historic House.

    I'm lovin' it! If you feel the need for toning it down, maybe a smaller pillow in an all-over print? (How do you feel about a Cheetah print of camel with tiny black dots?) On the other hand, you WERE going for a pop of color, a jolt of warmth. Maybe you just need a little time to "warm up" to it. :)

    Well I really like it, but it would really depend on the context of the room in which it would be residing. Could you show us more of that?

    Are you kidding me!!!??? I tore through my fabrics last week trying to find a similar silk to make some pillows. I've had a pic of some on a gray wool flannel settee on my inspiration board since September and have made myself nuts over it! You would love it too!

    The chair looks amazing, what a great new outfit for your find!

    Debra........I have to say I love it, I really do. Thats such a beautiful gorgeous rich color and its in velvet nonetheless!! Keep it! It will give you that 'pop" you are looking for.

    i love that color. its a beautiful accent color.

    i like to bring pops of color with plain velvet pillows. that's my new thing - i love how the velvet absorbs the color and looks matte. plus i love 24 inch or 26 in pillows on sofa - plain velvet.

    know which image made me stare the longest? yours with the bolts of fabric. i think the upholstered chair's a keeper whether you attempt to tame it or not. yum.

    Your chair looks beautiful Debra! The colour is so warm and inviting. I am usually a lover of neutral colour schemes but I love the pictures you've used here and I think your chair will have the same effect in your home. x Sharon

    Your nevousness about the color comes from the chair not having a context. Trust your instincts! The chair just needs the right "home'.

    We just finished an installation of a dining room in 1670 antique colonial and Sally used high back chairs upholstered in a very similar fabric for the chairs at each end of the dining table and a tapestry like fabric in the rooms drapery. The room looks fantastic!

    I am voting in the "love it" category. It really is a subtle orange, not at all flashy. The fact that the fabric is a silk velvet -- my favorite velvet -- gives it a look of quality that, I believe, will not seem trendy in a few years.

    I'm subscribed by email and needlesstosay, everyone posts show up a day late in my box...
    but about the chair, absolutely love velvet and the chair is divine..I think it looks fabulous recovered in the velvet but I also think it's important to evaluate a piece in the context to other decor and furnishings in a room...if you look at the images you've selected, all are juxtaposed with other colors, shapes and styles lending a bit more interest and tempering the tomato soup color a bit...
    btw,Love all your rolls of fabric..so gorgeous!!

    I love it....and against gray it will look so perfect.
    Perhaps the wood might be painted an aged gray with a touch of gold or silver....I know I like to create trouble.
    I love the images you have so carefully gathered.
    I also love the pop orange can give to all white.

    If you really want to "tame" the color of the chair, remove that pillow, and replace it with one that has no white/beige/cream/pale yellow in it at ALL. The lighter colors in your pillow are amplifying the orange, not toning it down. Try a pillow with khaki/black/brown/navy tones, I think the darkers will tone down the "noise."

    Meanwhile, you have a real winner there, you truly scored! I love what you did and any day now you'll probably grow to adore this brand new color in your life.

    You are my cup of tea!! I LOVE this look - especially your chair!!!!! You nailed it completely!!!!! Orange is one of my happy colors! My parents just recently moved into their Belgian inspired country home and hung the most beautiful vibrant orange Murano glass chandelier. This transformed their room and it's my favorite object in their home. Way to be brave - it paid off! Have a wonderful Monday!

    Oh my gosh- definitely keep it. It's gorgeous. This past weekend, I just painted a little table and chairs that exact color- kind of for a pop of color in our gray room- sound familiar, haha, I think you would like it :)

    I love the chair. You might need to add a little bit of the color around the room to balance out the boldness. Pillows on the sofa or flowers, something so the boldness of the chair isn't the only pop of color. Keep the chair.

    Debra, I love it! Definitely keep it. A little dramatic touch keeps everything from being boring. Beautiful.
    Also, thanks so much for your sweet comment. I do have the flu as does most of southern California right now. The only other thing I had this year was knee surgery and that was due to an injury long ago. Knock on wood I am an extremely healthy person. You are so sweet and I appreciated your concern. XO

    Hi Debra, you found lots of great pictures with that tomato-red color. I think I agree with an earlier comment about carrying that color around the room so it's not all by itself. That chair was quite a buy at 25.00. Don't you just love when you come across a deal? I think it's beautiful the way it is, but would be curious to see it with a pillow in the darker colors that someone in an earlier comment suggested. BTW how is your tapestry coming? I think you were working on it after breakfast the other morning.

    The chair looks stunning and will look even more so against the grey wall when you change the color. You just need to get used to it as it is obviously a new color for you. It is gorgeous! I like the inspirational pics, too..definitely impactful and interesting. It is such an earthy color that it works beautifully (as opposed to a more red hue).

    I'm with every one else on this Debra, definitely a keep, it looks warm and elegant. If you're taking time to get used to the colour, how about a darker cushion that will tone down the pop factor? In any case that chair was a great find and somebody (you?) has done an even greater job covering it.

    Hi Debra, I suggest: take your time and leave it as it is. It will find "it's" place when you are ready. Maybe you should soften the look a bit by draping a non-white (nature, cream etc. - don't know if I explain it correctly) shawl or plaid on the chair? I like the look.     I love what I call the cream of tomato soup color. I have an 80's print on my living room sofa and cant bear to part with my "Vreeland" look, so I've used the color for a long time. While I appreciate the calm of a neutral room, I need color! LOVE the chair!

    I love the color and fabric...I say keep it. Maybe just change the pillow, I love the idea Revi had of a leopard pillow! Something in a chunky linen might be pretty too, just adding another texture.
