Daydreaming.....

The New Eighteenth Century Style

I don’t know about you but after our Thanksgiving holiday I’ve been walking around in a turkey stupor. The last guest is gone and after all the cooking and cleaning I’ve done I’m ready to laze about doing nothing except read a book. What better piece of furniture to turn to then a daybed.

Eleanor Cummings, Veranda

Daybed, the very word allows us to sleep when the sun is out…it’s even a spot for some serious slumbering when the moon’s high. What other piece of furniture dictates a particular use at a given time?

As seating, the daybed serves as a settee or little sofa.

Lisa Luby Ryan

In a small room it can replace a sofa entirely freeing up additional floor space.

Sue's living room from The Zhush

If the room is large, a daybed can anchor a secondary seating group that complements the main pieces.

Daybeds work well in any room or as here an outside room. This is one versatile piece that doesn’t state what room to place it.

There are no rules of placement either and using one out in the room lends itself nicely so that people can sit from both directions.

Pottery Barn

This setting just says, “Dive right in and enjoy!”

Remodelista

Because of the daybeds sculptural nature it can easily stand alone.

I bet you thought I was going to show you a picture of my daybed huh? Unfortunately I don’t have one and as much as I would like a daybed I don’t really have anywhere to put one. So how about you, anyone out there with a daybed?

I am with you..love daybeds, cannot imagine a room where they don't look amazing. I would love to get one one day, not sure for where but they are so inviting looking. I am especially loving the one with the dog on it and the Lisa Luby Ryan picture, all beautiful! Glad your Thanksgiving was a great one....one holiday down one big one to go!

I've never had one, but I sure do love them!
Our boy is getting ready to head back to college for finals before turning around and coming back for Christmas!
It's such a busy time of year.... We've been lying around all weekend eating and watching football and movies :)

I love the idea of a day bed as well - these are all beautiful! I don't have one but am thinking of putting one in my younger daughter's room when we redo it soon. She loves the idea of having somewhere to laze around and we will choose one with a trundle under for guests!!

I tried to choose a favourite here but it was impossible - they are all beautiful! I don't have one but do lust after one - they just seem so indulgent and I do like to indulge! Lovely post as usual. x Sharon

I am in love with image #1 and also all of the tufted beauties!! Gorgeous. Yes, Thanksgiving is wonderful but it's a lot of preparation and cleaning... a good rest is always needed after! xo

I also love them and hope to have one when I buy new living room furniture for our next house! You showed a couple with rounded edges - I think that's key for comfort but they are all gorgeous examples...

This is the perfect after T-day post! Technically, we have one--a Napoleon III meridienne--but Ben has claimed it as his doggy bed so I don't use it. Our boy has good taste. :)

Are you really sure you don't have ANY space for one? Up in the studio?

Bisous!

I got a small daybed for my daughters room last year, when I found it at a tag sale for 100! I repainted it and its so beautiful, right now she has pillows and a few of her collectible dolls on it but it doubles as an extra bed for when she has sleepovers and is great.

There is nothing I love more. I bought one for my guest, and I adore relaxing with a good book in there!! Gorgeous images to start my Monday ~

Love all these images, especially Sue's house, which I've actually visited!

I do have a daybed that I love - in my living room. It's 19th C. French, covered with pillows, right in front of the window. The perfect perch on a rainy day with a book!

ps: Did NOT know that about poinsettias. I guess it's paperwhites for me, as this is our sweet dog, Molly's first Christmas with us.

What a brilliant idea for a fun "post" Thanksgiving post! I loved seeing my living room here...and you would think that after hosting 19 people here on Thursday that today would have me lounging like Cleopatra on that bed, but alas, with a retail site, there will be no rest till new years! (and then someone will need to pry me away!)

Love all your daybeds! I've had one in my bedroom for years. I'm thinking of shaking things up a bit and putting it in my dining room or living room. I enjoyed this post!

Love a daybed and have recommended them to clients in spaces where they would work. Did have a daybed or 2 growing up but not at the moment (unfortunately) and yes, they are so versatile. Great pics!

Love them under a window or in front of a fireplace. Really lovely examples here.

I'm with you, it is one of the most versitile and beautiful pieces of furniture, yet I don't have one either! I always thought I'd find an antique and then spotted one from Oly a few years ago...one day I'll find a way to get my hands on one and by then I will surely need to lay down from such an exhaustive search!!!

You would die if you saw how many saved images of daybeds I have...thanks alot for making it even more crazy :)

Yes. I've had a daybed. For years it commanded a prominent spot in the living room wherever we lived. The mattress and pillows were covered in a pomegranate colored watered silk. It was beautiful and miserable. Miserable to sit on and impossible to really get comfortable for a nap. I didn't read any other comments because I was afraid if I did I wouldn't be willing to tell the truth. I miss it as a decorative element but not as a utilitarian unit.

Sami (hoping not to have offended any daybed lover)

French-Kissed said...

Happy to say I do have one...been obsessed with them for as long as I can remember (and chaises), but I could do with several more. I agree with Sami that most are not at all comfortable...ours in is my daughter's bedroom...an extra large room that used to be two...did not want to give up the extra sleeping space when we combined the rooms so ours really needed to be comfortable for sleeping as well as sitting. For sitting the fix was to put it up against a wall and use a couple of plump very supportive pillows (one is actually the back cushion rescued from an old love seat) and then all of the fun decorative ones. For sleeping I would have liked to have used a regular mattress but since it is an antique that would have required a custom size...quite expensive. The easy fix was a very firm stock futon mattress...perfect size. The futon mattress also keeps the less structured antique look. While I would not want to sleep on it nightly, it's great for sitting, napping and even up to 3 or 4 nights in a row. Hope this gives some ideas to your readers about how to make their daybeds comfy. I did struggle getting ours just right so after the holidays maybe I will do a post and go layer by layer with photos to show the solutions that worked for us because the bedding is a bit tricky too if you can't or don't want to go custom with it...right now I am considering making slip covers for the upholstered ends like you show above. Sorry to ramble on, but when you really love a look there are ways to have your bed and sleep in it too!

There is nothing like a great daybed. We have an antique one on our sleeping porch, and it is the best place to curl up with a good book. Love all your photos.

Daybeds? Sure, everywhere....however, it is like on one of your photos. Every daybed alreaday occupied by a dog :-( Be nice, let Dylan have one for himself, too. You go on working and he sleeps in his daybed... How about that? Whoof, Whoof to Dylan-boy and hugs to you, Nik

Sitting around and reading a book sounds great right now! I too love daybeds but do not have one. I have thought about putting one at the end of my bed, instead of a bench. A lovely post, as always Debra! xo

Growing up we had a day bed right in front of a fireplace. As teens, my brother and I would be motivated to be the first home on a Fri or Sat night just so we could claim that daybed for the night! Good times:)

I adore daybeds. I don't have one but my parents did and I loved it. There is something magical about them in a room. I love all the images you have shown, especially the one with the large wooden doors...Wow, I love that!
I have been so busy with work and Thanksgiving company so I'm just getting around to leaving comments and posting today. I actually viewed your post at work the other day but couldn't leave a comment so I was anxious for a free moment to come visit you and comment. Another wonderful post, Debra!

Love the image via The Zhush. I think an upholstered bench is a great way to add seating and divide up a room without a visual break up of the space. Thanks again for following!
